According to a European-based international index, Filipino students continue to rank high in terms of English proficiency. However, in the most recent edition of the English Proficiency Index, the Philippines dropped from 18th to 22nd place out of 111.

The Philippines is ranked 22nd among countries with "high proficiency." This refers to "the ability to understand TV shows, read English newspapers, and give a presentation at work." It edged out Malaysia, which is ranked 24th, and is now scrambling to improve its students' English-language proficiency after decades of focusing on Bahasa Malaysia.

We can take pride in our still-high score, and we can work to improve our ranking. Online learning has demonstrated that boring lectures and grammar drills are not the only methods for teaching English. Communicative and student-centered approaches are equally effective. And knowledge is gained not only from printed texts, but also from watching English-language documentaries and films, reading anime or comics, and learning about the culture that surrounds the language itself. The end.
