Designer explains the inspiration for Celeste Cortesi's 'Darna' costume for Miss Universe 2022.


Celeste Cortesi, a Filipina-Italian beauty queen, wowed the crowd in a Pinoy superhero-inspired national costume for Miss Universe 2022.

According to the Miss Universe Philippines official website, Celeste embodied a cultural icon that represents kindness, empathy, and empowerment.

Following Celeste Cortesi's outstanding performance in the preliminary round of Miss Universe 2022, one of the designers of her Darna national costume revealed the meaning behind the eye-catching piece.

“If you will notice by history the costume of Darna is very simple so we want Darna to be shiny,”

“It’s the representation of the Philippines, shining through everywhere. The sun of the Philippines shining through everywhere,” -Jerome Navarro, fashion and accessory designer, stated in one TV interview.

Mars Ravelo's Darna (or simply Darna) is a Philippine superhero series broadcast by Kapamilya Channel. The series is based on Mars Ravelo's Philippine fictional character of the same name.

Marcial "Mars" Ravelo (October 9, 1916 – September 12, 1988) was a Filipino comic book cartoonist and graphic novelist who created Darna, Dyesebel, Captain Barbell, Lastikman, Bondying, Varga, Wanted: Perfect Mother, Hiwaga, Maruja, Mariposa, Roberta, Rita, Buhay Pilipino, Jack and Jill, Flash Bomba, Tiny Tony, and Dragonna among others.
