The Office of the Ombudsman confirmed on Tuesday that officials from the Department of Agriculture (DA) will be investigated in connection with the market's soaring prices for red and white onions.

Ombudsman Samuel Martires said he wanted to look into traders' involvement in price manipulation, which may have caused a spike in farmgate onion prices.

According to Israel Reguyal, Chairman of Bonena Multipurpose Cooperative, traders began a bidding process last month, resulting in farmgate prices ranging from 550 to 570 per kilo.

Martires stated that he will seek clarification from DA officials as well as Food Terminal Inc. (FTI)

The DA set aside 140 million dollars to purchase onions from farmers at farmgate prices, while the FTI purchased the onions from Bonena.
